It's amazing the technology we have these days. Not only can we now watch TV without commercials, but we can even skip over the, probably 30 seconds or more, intro song or theme to our show. We don't have to see the actors names, directors, background information on the show, etc. We can just skip all that information.
Usually when I start a new show, the "skip intro" option I leave for maybe the first or second time. I get to see who is acting in the show, listen to the introduction, etc. After that, that convenient button usually gets pressed...except for the few times I decide to be nostalgic and clap along to the Friends theme song (anyone else?)
The "skip intro" got me thinking about this new season of school. September is full of getting to know our colleagues, our students, saying hello. Smiling and greeting them as they walk into school the first day. Learning names. Discovering passions.
The introduction.
But how easy is it, once we've gotten used to the introduction, to..."skip intro"?
I worked with a teacher years ago, and every morning she would stand at the door when the morning bell rang, and greet each student, make eye contact, and use their name. Every single day. And although I understood the significance behind it, I don't think I truly saw how important it was. She was showing her students how important they were, every morning, starting the day off with a personal "hello" and a smile.
I would say I'm putting a challenge out to everyone out there, but it's more one for myself. To greet my students daily. To smile. To use their name. To ask them how they are doing. To show them how happy I am to see them. To not get comfortable in thinking I know my students enough, that I've got enough information.
To not, "skip intro".
