Teamwork. Flexibility. Support.
If you follow me on twitter, you may have seen these words posted before. They aren't random words, they are the 3 pillars to the educator team I work with.
I teach a special needs class, which means I work with a team of educators. If we put it into team perspective, I am the "team lead". I have teammates (educational assistants) who are absolutely amazing, and I also work with an incredible administrative staff team.
Over the time we have worked together, we have discovered the 3 pillars to our team, and why we work so effectively together.
______________________________________________
Teamwork.
"The combined action of a group of people". The key words being, the combined action. In our team, everyone plays an important role. We work together, we communicate together, we share ideas together. As the team lead, I always communicate updates, changes, necessary student information as this helps us be effective. I ensure the entire team knows the dayplan (I use planboard, which I will blog about soon), we have a shared whiteboard calendar in the room for the team to use, and we all ensure that we consistently communicate throughout the day. We all work with our students.
Key words we use: WE, OUR. It's not just my class, my students. It's OUR students. OUR classroom. OUR team.
Flexibility.
Being prepared and planning ahead is always good. I always have a dayplan, a structured week, and key events organized in advance (especially since we are educators in a special needs class, structure is key). But sometimes, flexibility is needed. Events change, dayplans get modified, team members get sick. Being flexible on a team is important. My teammates know that, even when I have a dayplan, something could change and we need to be flexible and prepare for a new schedule, a new event.
And as always, I as the team lead, am ready to be flexible. Sometimes events in the school get changed and I need to be ready to prepare my team and class. Be prepared, but be ready to be flexible.
Support.
Support can look like many things. In our team, it has looked like: buying a team member coffee or treats, offering a suggestion to a problem, attending meetings to better plan for our classroom, being a listening ear when needed, reminding someone of how incredible they are, playing pranks just to bring in more laughter into our jobs that can be difficult. Support is knowing that your teammates are there, not just because it's their job, but because they want to be there - to support our students, our team, and our school.
Teamwork. Flexibility. Support.
